A practical, functional, comfortable home - renovated to a high standard in 2008 with modern plumbing and electrics but retaining the charm and character of the original build. A warm cosy home in the winter; a cool, airy home in the summer. Lots of outdoor space to entertain and enough garden to potter in and enjoy but not enough to overwhelm...More.
All this and a cute cottage next door to house visitors!
There are three entrances to the house; the traditional wooden double doors from the front of the house to the main living room, the glass back door from the kitchen to the terrace and the wooden stable-style door at the side of the house into the kitchen. We usually use this one so will start our tour here...
The kitchen is 8.35m long and 2.8m wide with a tiled floor which runs throughout the ground floor. It has two stone inset recesses and an thick original beam spans the width of the room. The bespoke wall and floor cabinets were handmade and hand painted by an English craftsman based in Portugal and are topped with local marble worktops.
The corner cabinet has a ceramic belfast style sink and there is plumbing for a dishwasher or washing machine. There are plenty of electric points. A window (all windows are double glazed with wooden frames) overlooks the garden. There is plenty of space for a breakfast table looking out onto the raised terrace and the terrific views beyond.
There is even a handy dog flap...
Off the kitchen there is a full bathroom which doubles up as a utility room. It's plumbed for a washing machine and at 2.65m x 2.4m there is plenty of storage space. The bath, WC and wash hand basin are white and there is a shower attachment on the bath taps.
From the kitchen we go through one of two stone doorways into the family/dining room. This room has a fairly low ceiling but as long as you are under 6'5" your head is safe! The room is 4.6m x 4.2 with a small raised area in one corner (1.4m x 2m) which we find perfect as a computer/study area.
The room is heated by a very efficient wood burner which makes it a cosy TV room in the winter. There is no direct sun into this room so it is the natural place to escape the afternoon heat in the summer. There is a storage cupboard under the stairs however please do bear in mind that we will have chucked all manner of rubbish in there ahead of your visit!
The carpeted stairs from this room lead to the main living room. In contrast this room has a very high (4m) vaulted wooden ceiling. The room is 4.7m x 5.5m with a large stone inset feature and some exposed stonework. There is a handsome wood burner which heats the entire first floor. The staircase opening is protected by ornate handmade iron railings and there is a stained pine solid wood floor. Traditional Portuguese double doors open onto the large front terrace which is a lovely spot for enjoying the evening sun.
Both bedrooms are reached from the living room. The first is 2.75m square - so either a large single or small double - with a large window overlooking the front garden. This bright room is decorated in blue and white with white painted floorboards.
The main bedroom incorporates an open plan luxury bathroom in an L shaped layout. The bedroom area is 4m x 2.7m, the bathroom 3.1 x 2.5m. Two windows look out on to the side garden; another small window looks down the garden. Again there is a high, airy ceiling with a feature beam and a hatch to access the large loft space above the second bedroom. The main feature of the bathroom area is an oversized open shower with metallic bronze tiles and a rainfall shower head. There is a large, wall hung wash hand basin and a WC. The pipe from the downstairs woodburner passes through an alcove in the bathroom to warm the bath towels - lovely.
Outside there are lots and lots of areas where you can eat, relax, sunbathe, snooze or entertain. The terrace at the front of the house is reached by handsome old stone steps and measures 5.7m by 1.9m. Under the terrace is a storage area for the gas bottles, firewood and garden bric-a-brac. The front garden has a gravelled parking area, a flat space we use for an above ground swimming pool and a small veggie patch if you are good at gardening (I'm not!). The second terrace at the back of the house measures 5.7m x 3.5m (max) and again has storage underneath. The views are stunning and have to be seen - words aren't enough.
Next door is Casa da Toupeira (Mole Cottage) which was renovated in 2009 from a derelict, roofless ruin into a light, airy and very comfortable holiday cottage with the same fabulous views as the main house. It has been tastefully decorated and furnished in a simple style in keeping with the property. There are exposed stone walls, wooden doors and windows and cool tiled floors.
The downstairs area is open-plan with a fully fitted kitchen including a gas cooker, a fridge/freezer and a washing machine. The lounge area has a large sofa bed (kingsize) and two easy chairs along with occasional tables and lamps. There is a wood burning stove to take the chill off the air in the winter months.
Upstairs there is a double bedroom with a door to a small balcony - perfect for morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening! There is also a small single bedroom with a large storage cupboard. The bathroom has a white suite of toilet, wash hand basin and bath with shower over.
Outside there is a tiled patio area running the width of the house and there is a small fenced garden.
The total plot measure circa 800 square metres; the rectangular rear garden is fully fenced and slopes away gently from the house and there are plenty of fruit trees - apple, pear, plum, orange and several mature olive trees. There is also a well.
Although there is a property to the side the house is not overlooked and the garden is private. It is in a quiet hamlet with twice daily bread deliveries and a weekly fish van and it is within walking distance to the popular village of Chaos which has a lively Sunday market, a church, medical centre, a bar and a tiny shop. There is a larger minimart, bar, rural (farm) shop and petrol station 4 km away in Vales.
The house is roughly equidistant between Tomar, Ferreira do Zezere and Alvaiazere.
Lisbon airport is 90 minutes by either car or train. The historic university city of Coimbra is about 60 minutes drive. We like the area so much we are moving to the next valley - this lovely house is only for sale because the garden isn't quite big enough for our horses...
We look forward to welcoming you to our very special home. Less
